Search Engine Optimisation or 'SEO' is a phrase that's bandied around the Internet and is often quoted as the answer to all your problems of driving visitors to your website and business. More often than not you'll find such claims are made by companies who'll promise you 'listing in all major search engines' by tea-time.

The truth is that while search engine submission and indexing is important it's only part of the equation. A huge part of SEO is the design and build of the site itself, something that only you or your programmers can control. It's about clear use of textural content, good and clear navigation and proper use of sitemaps and robot files.

Getting ranked NUMBER ONE

Once again, much is made of how important it is to get ranked number one in a Google search and much is promised in this respect. What's important is to realise that being 'number one' doesn't necessarily mean very much and may mean nothing at all to your particular company. Microsoft™ isn't even on the first page of search results for 'computer software' but that doesn't seem to have hurt their profits much. Google's concept is all about relevant results so you should be aiming to ensure your site is indexed with pages that are relevant to the searches made by your customers. While this might also mean getting high in the search results it's the path there that's important, not the position.

More importantly, there are other methods of driving customers to your site that are far more effective than simply relying on organic, random, searches. Google Adwords, for example can produce astonishing results.
